How do billionaires joke? With billions of dollars!
2004 – Google
When Google prepared for its IPO, it announced plans to raise exactly $2,718,281,828.
Why such a strange number?
Because 2.718281828… is e, Euler’s number, one of the most important constants in mathematics.
A multibillion-dollar mathematical joke, hidden in an SEC filing.
2011 – Google again
During the auction for Nortel’s patents, Google submitted a bid of $3,141,590,000.
Recognize the number? 3.14159… is π (pi).
Google was essentially bidding π billion dollars. And that wasn’t its only bid based on a mathematical constant. Unfortunately, mathematical elegance didn’t win the auction. Google lost to a consortium that paid $4.5 billion.
2026 – NVIDIA and Hugging Face
The reported acquisition price? $12,930,300,000
Not $13 billion. Not $12.9 billion. Exactly $12,930,300,000.
And there’s an Easter egg hidden inside.
The number 129303 is the decimal representation of Unicode U+1F917.
Which happens to be 🤗 (the Hugging Face emoji).
But there’s another layer. The same number, interpreted as a hexadecimal color code, #129303, produces a shade of green referencing NVIDIA.
One price. Two companies. Two hidden references.
Behind biggest corporations, serious negotiations, and billions of dollars, there are still people who enjoy a clever joke.
When engineers become billionaires, they don’t stop being geeks. They just get bigger numbers to play with.
